Boot Into Fastboot or Recovery Without a PC or Buttons

Restart an Android phone into fastboot (bootloader), recovery or Samsung Download mode without a PC or buttons, plus key combos per brand and how to exit.

If the phone still starts normally, you can boot into fastboot (bootloader) or recovery without a PC and without touching the buttons: an app with an adb connection to the phone itself runs reboot bootloader or reboot recovery, the same commands a computer sends. This works on Android 11+ through Wireless debugging and needs no root. If the phone does not start, you need the button combination for your brand, listed below. Remember that fastboot itself has no adb: to flash anything there you still need a computer and a USB cable.

Which mode do you need?

ModeWhat it is forCommand
RecoveryFactory reset, wipe cache, install an official update filereboot recovery
Bootloader / fastbootFlashing images and unlocking the bootloader from a computerreboot bootloader
fastbootdFastboot inside recovery, for dynamic partitions on newer phonesreboot fastboot
Download modeSamsung only, firmware flashing with Odinreboot download

The full background is in ADB reboot: recovery, bootloader, fastboot and download mode.

The ADB Kit way (no PC, no buttons)

ADB Kit connects to the phone's own adb over Wireless debugging and has a restart tool.

One-time setup (about a minute, needs Wi-Fi): open the app's Home tab and follow its five steps: Wi-Fi, Developer options, Wireless debugging, pair with the code in the notification, connect. The guide in use ADB on Android without a PC walks through it.

Then, each time:

  1. Make sure Wireless debugging is on (it is often off after a restart).
  2. Open Tools and tap Restart device (Normal, bootloader or recovery).
  3. Pick Restart, Restart to bootloader or Restart to recovery.
  4. Confirm. The dialog warns: The connection drops until the phone is back.

The phone restarts straight into that mode. When it returns to Android, switch Wireless debugging on again and ADB Kit reconnects by itself.

fastbootd and Download mode

The Restart device tool has three choices only. For the other modes, open the Shell tab while connected and type the command:

reboot fastboot # fastbootd, on phones that support it
reboot download # Samsung Download mode

On Samsung phones, which have no fastboot, Restart to bootloader usually opens Download mode too, but this differs between models, so reboot download is the reliable choice. The app's Shell has the same rights as adb shell from a PC, so these commands work without root.

What the app cannot do

  • Enter a mode on a phone that will not start. It needs Android running. Use the buttons below.
  • Flash in fastboot or Download mode. Those modes have no adb and no Wi-Fi. Flashing needs a computer with fastboot, or Odin on Windows for Samsung.
  • Work on Android 10 or older without a computer once. Those phones have no Wireless debugging.

From a computer (if you have one)

With USB debugging on and the phone connected:

adb reboot bootloader
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot download # Samsung

Button combinations by brand (fallback)

Turn the phone off completely first, then hold the keys until the logo or menu appears. Combos change between models and years, so treat these as "on most models".

Broken volume buttons?

That is where the software route shines. If a button is broken and the phone still starts, ADB Kit's Restart device or adb reboot from a computer gets you there. If the phone does not start and a button is broken, a repair shop is often the only way.

How to exit each mode

  • Fastboot: hold Power for about 10 to 15 seconds until the phone restarts. On Pixel, Motorola and OnePlus menus, select Start or Reboot with the volume keys and press Power. From a computer: fastboot reboot.
  • Recovery: select Reboot system now with the volume keys and press Power.
  • Download mode (Samsung): hold Volume Down + Power (Side key) for about 7 to 10 seconds. On the warning screen, Volume Down cancels.
  • Stuck in a loop: hold Power and Volume Down together for about 15 seconds. Most phones force a restart.

If a phone always returns to fastboot, see fastboot mode on Android.

Common problems

  • "Restart to bootloader" just restarts normally. Some phones ignore the bootloader request or block it, for example some carrier-locked models. Try reboot fastboot in the Shell, or the button combo.
  • Nothing happens when I tap it. ADB Kit is not connected. Turn on Wireless debugging and the Reconnect popup takes it from there.
  • The PC does not see the phone in fastboot. That is a driver or cable issue on the computer, see fastboot waiting for device.

Safety note

Rebooting into a mode is harmless. What you do there is not: Wipe data / factory reset in recovery and unlocking the bootloader in fastboot both erase the phone. If you are not sure what an option does, choose the reboot option and go back to Android.
